Unbelievable Tales of Surgical Disasters

Unbelievable Tales of Surgical Disasters

Surgery can be stressful not just for the patient but for the surgeon as well. Surgeons can feel nervous, especially in emergency situations where they might not be fully prepared, dealing with complex issues, or having to make last-minute changes. Mistakes can happen, sometimes due to simple negligence.

Waking Up During Surgery
Imagine waking up during surgery, unable to move or speak while doctors are operating on you. That’s exactly what happened to Simon Rosenqvist, a 22-year-old from Sweden. He underwent surgery for a collapsed lung and woke up to hear the doctors working on him. He described the experience as horrifying, comparing it to a nightmare. According to experts, though rare, this can happen even after administering heavy anesthesia. The likelihood of it occurring is estimated at about one to two cases per 1,000 surgeries.

Retained Surgical Instruments
Sometimes surgeons make a simple but serious mistake: leaving objects inside a patient’s body. For instance, a 37-year-old woman experienced severe abdominal cramps and discovered a lump near her pelvic area. She had recently had surgery for a failed pregnancy, leading doctors to suspect a foreign object was left inside. Indeed, they found a surgical sponge, still in its wrapper, lodged in her small intestine.

Wrong-Site Surgery
It’s frightening but all too common for surgeons to operate on the wrong part of a patient’s body. Imagine a healthy eye being operated on instead of the unhealthy one, or even a wrong limb being amputated. A particularly severe case involved a 67-year-old woman who had just had successful brain surgery and was set to go home. Instead, she was mistakenly given an invasive cardiac operation due to a mix-up with another patient with the same last name. Fortunately, the error was recognized an hour into the surgery, and she was returned to her room in stable condition.

Cosmetic Surgery Confusion
Cosmetic surgery is so routine now that you’d think surgeons would have it down to an art. Yet many people end up disfigured because some doctors fail to advise against unnecessary procedures, like a fourth nose job. Even more shocking, some doctors have used unapproved forms of Botox, which can be as toxic as cyanide, to smooth out wrinkles.

Quasi-Surgeons
There are instances where people who aren’t qualified or who have been banned from practicing surgery manage to operate on patients. One notorious case is Jayant Patel, a surgeon whose negligence led to his practice being shut down in several U.S. states. He then moved to Australia to continue his work until he was discovered and charged with manslaughter and grievous bodily harm, leading to a seven-year prison sentence.
