Is Getting a Flu Shot the Right Choice for You?

Is Getting a Flu Shot the Right Choice for You?

If you’re considering getting a flu shot, here are a few things to think about:

Every medical procedure, including a flu shot, comes with its own set of risks and benefits. Barbara Abruzzo, who runs Livingwell Care Navigation, believes in a holistic, personalized approach to health, rather than a one-size-fits-all method.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend the flu shot for high-risk groups, but it doesn’t mean everyone has to get it. High-risk groups include children aged six months to 18 years, healthcare workers, senior citizens, caregivers for children under six months, and people with pre-existing medical conditions. If you don’t fall into any of these categories, Abruzzo suggests you might want to reconsider getting the vaccine.

Additionally, it’s important to note that the multi-dose flu vaccines contain mercury as a preservative. Pregnant or nursing women should request the single-dose vaccine, which is mercury-free, though these are in limited supply.

It’s still possible to get a flu shot this season if you decide you want one and can find a place that offers it, even later in the season.

Whether or not you get the flu shot, there are ways to protect yourself from the flu. Abruzzo recommends wearing a mask if you’re around someone with flu symptoms and asking them to do the same. Washing your hands frequently with soap and water or using hand sanitizer like Purell is also crucial. Regularly flushing your sinuses with a mild saline solution can help keep your mucous membranes moist.

Abruzzo also suggests taking supplements like high doses of buffered Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, zinc, probiotics, and fish oil to boost your immune system.

Don’t forget to get enough sleep, ideally 7 to 8 hours a night, to keep your immune system strong. Regular exercise, about 30 to 45 minutes at a time, can also help, but avoid overtraining if you’re feeling weak as it can have a negative impact on your health.
