Unraveling the Mystery of Bunions

A bunion, medically known as hallux valgus, happens when the bone on the knuckle of your big toe becomes inflamed. This condition is more common in women and can run in families. Those affected by bunions often experience pain and swelling in the big toe, making it hard to wear regular shoes comfortably.

#### Surgery

While there are several non-surgical ways to ease the pain, these methods won’t stop bunions from worsening. The most effective solution for severe bunions is surgery.

Before the surgery, your general practitioner will help you prepare and answer any questions you might have. If you smoke, it’s strongly advised to quit during the recovery period, as smoking can increase the risk of wound infection and slow down healing.

The surgery itself can be done under general or local anesthesia. If you’re worried about pain, a sedative can be given along with the local anesthetic to help you relax. During the procedure, you might have to wear a compression stocking on the untreated leg to keep the circulation healthy. Typically, the surgery takes less than an hour, but this can vary.

In a keyhole surgery, the surgeon makes a small cut on the inside of the foot near the big toe joint. They then remove and reposition bones, ligaments, and tendons. Wires are inserted to keep the bones in place and these may either dissolve over time or need to be removed later.

Most patients can go home the same day after surgery, once the anesthetic has worn off. You might need pain relief to manage any discomfort. To protect your foot while it heals, it will be bandaged or placed in a plaster cast.

After surgery, avoid drinking alcohol, signing important documents, or operating machinery for at least 48 hours, as anesthesia can affect your coordination and tolerance levels.

Full recovery from bunion surgery can take up to eight weeks. Initially, you might need crutches and a special post-operative shoe to help you walk. It’s crucial to keep your bandages dry and wear a protective shoe when outside. When sitting down, elevate your foot to help reduce swelling.
