Exploring the Globe's Favorite Buzz

All around the world, millions of people love starting their day with the smell and taste of fresh coffee. It benefits everyone – from students pulling all-nighters, to workers needing a boost before heading out, to athletes gearing up for their events. It’s their morning fix, and it’s no wonder that coffee (or more accurately, the caffeine in it) is the world’s most popular psychoactive drug.

Coffee helps keep you alert and boosts brain activity during the day. It’s even said to have played a significant role during the Renaissance. As a result, coffee and caffeinated drinks are always in high demand to fight off drowsiness. It’s no surprise that a study shows about 90% of Americans consume caffeine daily.

Back in 2008, another study aimed to find out which countries drank the most coffee. Finland came out on top, with an average of 12 kg of coffee consumed per person. For comparison, the UK ranked 44th with an average of 2.8 kg per person.

You don’t need to dive into the science of how caffeine affects the body. If you live in the Western world, you only have to look at the variety of coffee makers available in stores and online. Espresso machines, latte makers, and coffee bean grinders all show just how much people want – or need – caffeine.

The Home Brew Lifestyle

Every year, more people are grinding their own coffee beans and making espressos at home. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that making coffee at home is more popular than home-brewing beer. Coffee is so ingrained in our culture, and many others, that we might not even realize the size of the industry around us.

Even if you don’t have a coffee machine at home, you don’t have to go far to find a good cup of coffee. Cafés and specialty coffee bars are everywhere, and even bookshops have merged coffee with their business perfectly. Who can resist the comfort of a hot Americano while browsing through books?

So, whether you’re a fan of coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, or any other caffeinated beverages, let’s take a moment to appreciate where we’d be without them.
