Getting your life in order after the arrival of a new baby can make everything run smoother, giving you more time and energy to enjoy these special moments. Prioritizing is key, even though it may seem impossible in the beginning. You might find yourself still in your pajamas by the afternoon, makeup-free for days, and surrounded by chores.
Don’t worry! It’s all completely normal and nothing to stress about. Many midwives and health visitors expect to see a bit of chaos in a home with a newborn. An overly tidy home might suggest that the family is stressing too much about cleaning instead of bonding with the baby or that the mother is overexerting herself, risking exhaustion and postnatal depression. However, there are some strategies to help you feel more in control without overdoing it.
Try getting organized before the baby arrives. Prepare and freeze meals, tackle major household chores like cleaning curtains or fixing things around the house, and stock up on essentials like washing powder and light bulbs. Take care of yearly tasks, such as your car’s MOT, your pet’s vaccinations, your other children’s dental checkups, and household insurance renewals. If these are usually your partner’s tasks, remind them to handle these before the baby comes.
Make a list of people you want to inform about the birth. Set up an email group or address envelopes for mailing birth announcement cards. If you have the energy at the end of your pregnancy, do a thorough clean of your home, one room at a time, so you don’t have to worry about it afterward.
Sort through your clothes for after the baby arrives, but don’t expect to fit into your jeans right away. Make sure everything is washed, ironed, and ready to wear. Arrange with friends and neighbors to help out with your other kids—getting them to school, having them over after school, or walking your dog.
With a bit of planning and support, you can create a space that allows you to focus on what’s most important: enjoying your new baby.
